Speech by Marie Agnus

Granddaughter of Jean Agnus, engineer officer

Hello,

My name is Marie Agnus, and I'm going to tell you a story. That of a little girl with brown curls and green eyes who, 11 years ago, made a secret friend.

I was 8 years old then. He was everywhere with me, and in the evening, in the secrecy of my room, I told him about my days, my heartaches and my annoyances. And he was still smiling, peacefully, attentive to the story of my little life. This secret friend was my grandfather, a grandfather I never knew.

One day, his mother, my great-grandmother, died, and this time it was with them both that I spoke for a while. She laughed, talked and advised me wisely. He didn't say anything. And then one day, the pain passed, the mourning was over, and I never saw my great-grandmother again. My grandfather was still there, more silent than ever.

In 11 years, he has never left me. And it's only now that I confess this story: my grandfather was my imaginary friend, my best-kept secret, and one of the people I most feared losing, even when he was already left 51 years ago. His name was Jean-Marie AGNUS, lieutenant. And he was a good person.

And today begins a new cycle: after 51 years, our loved ones are no longer missing, they are somewhere, found, and at peace. It will certainly take some time before we talk about it again, but I am firmly convinced that we will talk about them again with a smile, and a peaceful soul.

For my part, I will strive to ensure that my children, the 4th generation, know how wonderful my grandfather was, so that he continues to live through our memories, even those created in the secret of bedroom of an 8 year old child.

Thanks.
